JUNAGADH : CITY OF OLD FORT

Junagadh (means Old Fort), the 7th largest city in Gujarat is an ancient and famous tourism city of Gujarat with various interesting, & attractive places and has many eye catching monuments reflecting its great history. Junagadh is the headquarters of Junagadh district in Gujarat. It is located at the foot of the Girnar hills, 355 km south west of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.
It is also known as "Sorath", the name of the earlier Princely State of Junagadh. After a brief struggle between India and Pakistan, Junagadh joined India on 9 November 1947. It was a part of Saurashtra state and later Bombay state. In 1960, after the Maha Gujarat movement, it became part of newly formed Gujarat state. Junagadh was known by various names like 'Raivatachal', 'Raivatnagar', 'Revant', 'Manipur', 'Chandraketapur', 'Puratanpur', 'Pratappur', 'Narendrapur', 'Girinagar', 'Karan Kunj', 'Jirna Durg', 'Mustafabad' and finally the present name “Junagadh” was given by the British Government in 1820AD.









Its a place of pilgrimage and has produced a number of saints in its long history one of them being the most famous Gujarati saint-poet, Narsinha Mehta. Millions of tourists from the whole world visits here every year in various seasons, festivals and occasions. Best season to visit here is from October to April.
Junagadh is unique among the other historical cities of India, as it comprises of historical monuments starting from the very ancient age (500 BC) till the most recent history of partition of India in 1947 AD. Hence, there are many historical monuments worth visiting here. The city has earned an important place in Gujarat tourism. Everyday thousands of visitors / tourists visit city for religious, entertainment and educational trips. Two main festivals celebrated here are 'Parikrama' (October-November during the period of five days concluding on the full-moon day of Kartik Month) and 'Maha Shivratri' (February-March on the No-Moon-day of Magha Month) every year. Intresting places to visit are Darbar Hall Museum, Dataar Hills, Uperkot Fort, Jain Derasar, Ashok Shilalekh, Wellington Dam, Vagheshwari Temple, Tulsi Shyam Springs etc..
